How do blockages occur in drains?

Sooner or later, every drain will become clogged because tiny remnants of food, grease and non-food items accumulate and settle in it, as well as in the pipes. In sinks, these are most often grease, oil, coffee grounds and leftover fibrous food. In bathroom drains, it is most often a question of hair (hair washing, shaving, combing...) and soap residues, which when mixed together form solid clumps that clog the drain.

A drain pipe can also be clogged beacuse of small toys or their parts that children throw into drains. As for the toilet drain, it is most often blocked by flushing excessive amounts of toilet paper or paper towels, tampons and other hygiene items.

A warning sign can be the appearance of drain flies, so if you notice them, immediately look for a solution to the clogged drain.

How to unclog the drain pipe?

It depends on the type and cause of the blockage. Start with the simplest and mildest measures. Fill the drain with boiling water. If that doesn't help, mix baking soda and vinegar. This can help with mild blockages. Pour them down the drain, let it work (overnight is best), then pour boiling water over it.

If the above did not help, then your drain is very clogged. Try bending a wire hanger into the shape of a fishing hook, then push it down the drain and start fishing. After pulling out hair and/or other substances, it is recommended to run hot water to clear the drain. Another possibility is a vacuum plunger for unclogging. Place it firmly over the drain opening and press down. Once the water comes out, you can start pushing harder, but don't give up if you don't see any progress after four or five plunges. It may take more than a dozen plunges when cleaning clogged pipes to see results.

If that doesn't clear your drain either, you'll need the help of a chemical drain cleaner. Choosing a chemical agent can be a risky option as chemicals can be corrosive to pipes. Therefore, we recommend you to use the quality and proven drain cleaner Pure100 Drain Free, which is produced in Germany, which guarantees quality and strong action, while protecting your pipes, whether they are plastic or metal. It is a powerful drain cleaner with granules of natural active oxygen and activated soda that remove stubborn deposits of grease, soap, hair and food. Maintain drains regularly!

Make sure you have protective guards over drains to catch hair and other debris. Whether you use a dishwasher or wash dishes by hand, first remove food residue from dishes into the trash can. Be careful what you throw in the sink or toilet bowl!

You can also regularly maintain your drains by pouring hot water or a cup of vinegar down them once a week, letting it sit for half an hour, then pouring two liters of hot water down the drain. It's also a good, preventative idea to clean your home's plumbing regularly with Pure100 Drain Free to avoid costly emergency repairs.
